Console commands you didn't know the use of - Part II
      #2712514 - 06/21/04 02:48 PM

This is somewhat similar to that last one, ORI. I just figured out what BetaComment (BC) does.

In Morrowind.ini there's a line that says:
Beta Comment File=

If you give it a file name, like so:
Beta Comment File=BetaComment.txt

Then you can use the BC Command to make a note about an object in the game. You open the console and click something, then type your comment, like this:

BC "Root not attached well."

And in BetaComment.txt you get:

6/20/2004 (21:02) Morrowind.esm 5/8/2003 (21:07) Paul ex_t_root_03 Tel Vos (10,14) 85078 118468 4111 "Root not attached well."

The time I made the comment, the file the object is from, the modification time of that file, my name (windows log-in I think), the cell, the X, Y and Z Position of the object, and of course, the comment.

There you have it. It was obviously it was designed for beta testers, but it could still be helpful if your're testing your own mod, or even to make note of an interesting cave you want to return to.

Cool. I was just assembling a better console command list for MSFD, and this was one that I was missing.
The others I couldn't find out about yet are ToggleTextureString and Purge Texture -know anything about those?

Oh yeah, PurgeTexture I know. It simply makes the game reload all the textures. If you play in full screen mode, it seems to do that every time you ALT+Tab away and back already, but if you use windowed mode, you can use this to see your changes right away if you edit a texture while the game is running... though I may have had some crashes from doing that.

Hhhhmmm.... Betacomment writes to an external file? Interesting. Is there any way to retrieve those FROM the file while in-game???? The ability to store data in this, for later retrieval would have some truly cool possibilities.

Have you tried using BetaComment (or BC) in a script? If it worked, that would be fantastic for script debugging: put test points in the script that write comments to tell you how far the script went, which branches were used, etc. Similar to using message boxes, but in a form that you could keep for reference outside the game.

Well, let's see...

Nope, didn't seem to. It didn't cause an error, but didn't do anything else either.

Excellent info ManaUser! I have a pad of paper beside the computer to jot down notes or things to fix as I test my mod. This will be very handy!
